회사 동료로부터 ‘좋은 글귀’라는 이메일을 받았습니다. 많은 것을 느끼게 해주는 글이더군요. 그런데 출처가 없어 각종 검색 사이트를 검색해보니, 결국 국내 포털 사이트에서는 찾을 수 없었습니다. 게다가 최근 폐해가 지적되고 있는 네이버 등에서 검색되는 글은 원문을 심하게 변형, 왜곡시킨 글들이 많이 있었습니다. 그래서 구글에서 영어로 검색을 하다가 저는 이 글이 Marcey Gaitan 라는 분이 쓴 글임을 알게 되었고, 이를 간략히 번역하여 원작자가 가졌던 의미를 최대한 고스란히 전달하기로 마음 먹었습니다.

바쁘게 하루하루를 살아가는 직장인이나, 앞만 보고 달려가지만 정작 우선순위를 두지 못하는 젊은 대학생들, 그리고 괜히 삶이 허전한 것 같다고 생각하는 이 시대의 이웃들과 나누고 싶은 글입니다.

A professor stood before his child development class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, he wordlessly picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.

 

한 교수가 어린이 개발 프로그램의 강의 시간에 뭔가를 앞에 두고 서 있었다. 수업이 시작되자 그는 말 없이 매우 크고 텅빈 마요네스 병을 집어 들더니 골프공으로 채웠다. 그리곤 수강생들에게 병이 찼는지 물었다. 그들은 그렇다고 동의했다.

The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.

 

그러자 교수는 자갈이 든 상자를 들더니 병 안으로 부었다. 병을 살짝 흔들었다. 자갈들은 골프공 사이의 빈공간으로 흘러들어갔다. 그 다음 학생들에게 병이 찼는지 다시 물었다. 그들은 그렇다고 동의했다.

 

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with a unanimous "yes."
 

교수는 그 다음에 모레 상자를 들어 병 안에 부었다. 물론 그 모래는 나머지 부분을 다 채웠다. 그는 병이 다 찼는지 한번 더 물었다. 학생들은 만장일치로 ‘네’하고 대답했다.

 

The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed.

그 교수는 그러자 탁자 아래에서 커피 두 잔을 만들어서는 모두 다 병 안으로 들이 붓자 모래 사이의 빈공간을 잘 채우며 흘러들어갔다. 학생들은 웃었다.

"Now," said the professor as the laughter subsided, "I want you to recognize that this jar represents the mind of each student as they enter your classroom on the first day of school. The golf balls are the important things --- God, family, friends, health, home, and the children's favorite passions --- and if everything else was lost and only they remained, their life would still be full.
 

웃음이 잦아들자 교수는 말했다,

자, 저는 바로 이 마요네즈 병이 등교 첫날 교실에 들어올 때 그들(아이들)이 가졌던 그 마음을 대변한다는 걸 알려주고 싶습니다. 골프공은 신, 가족, 친구, 건강, 가정 그리고 어린이들의 열정과 같이 제일 중요한 것들입니다. 만약 다른 것들을 다 잃고 그것들만 남겨진다 해도, 그들의 삶은 여전히 꽉 찰 것입니다.

The pebbles represent the knowledge they have acquired up until now. Unfortunately, each child will have a different amount of pebbles. 

자갈은 그들이 지금까지 쌓아온 지식을 뜻합니다. 불행히도, 개개인의 아이들은 각기 다른 양의 자갈을 가지겠지요.

The sand is your responsibility! It is your job to fill their minds as tight as you possibly can in the short time that you have them. At the end of each year, the sand comes together as pebbles, ready to be sent off to the next teacher.

모래는 여러분의 책임져야 할 것들입니다! 여러분이 그들과 함께하는 짧은 시간동안 그들의 마음을 최대한 빽빽하게 채우는 것은 바로 여러분이 해야 할 일입니다. 매해의 연말이면 모래는 자갈처럼 되어 버리고 곧 다음 선생님에게 보낼 준비가 됩니다.

The professor paused... 

교수는 잠시 멈추었다.

One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the coffee represented. The professor smiled and said, "I'm glad you asked."

한 학생이 손을 들더니 커피가 의미하는 것은 무엇인지 물었다. 그 교수는 미소를 지으며 얘기했다. “물어봐 주다니 기쁘군요”

He replied, "The coffee is CARE and LOVE." 

그는 대답했다. “커피는 관심과 사랑입니다.”
